S. 6th Street Closure
Bridge Replacement Begins Week of November 18, 2024
The City of Oak Creek is preparing to start construction activities to replace the aging S. 6th Street bridge, located at 7600 S. 6th Street, just south of W. Marquette Avenue. This project will require the full closure of S. 6th Street in both directions beginning the week of November 18, 2024. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic by June 2025.
Project Details and Reasons for Closure
The current bridge has significant wear and tear, including visible cracks, weakened concrete, and corrosion, making it less safe for heavy traffic. To address these issues, the bridge will be completely rebuilt with a simpler, safer design. This new structure will be slightly narrower, matching the width of the nearby road sections, and will not include a center median.
Additional improvements will include:
- New pavement extending north and south of the bridge.
- Updates to nearby driveways within the construction area.
- Installation of a new guardrail and other safety features.
This project is funded in part through State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation Local Bridge Program, with State and Federal funds covering 80% of the estimated costs. The City is responsible for the remaining 20%.
Detour Information
During construction, detours will be clearly posted. Drivers are advised to follow the designated detour route: W. Marquette Avenue, S. Howell Avenue, and W. Drexel Avenue.
Community Impact
While we work to minimize disruptions, there will be unavoidable inconveniences throughout the duration of this project. The City of Oak Creek appreciates the community’s patience as we invest in safer infrastructure.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve Oak Creek’s roadways.
