Oak Creek, Wis – September 19, 2025 – Data drives our world, and the Oak Creek Police Department has developed a way to funnel all that information into an award-winning crime analytics dashboard.
The International Association of Crime Analysts just announced its 2025 award winners, and the Oak Creek Police Department's Calls for Service (CFS) Dashboard won first place.
And it’s all thanks to Daniel Carranco, a Crime Analyst for the Oak Creek Police Department, who created the CFS dashboard and has spent the last six years fine-tuning it.
“What’s really cool about this dashboard is that it was developed using free open-source software, R Studio. Some software is super expensive, but this was free to build and distribute, so it made it ideal to utilize,” Carranco explained.
The dashboard displays live data from the department’s report management system (RMS). Once a call is entered, it automatically pulls it, creating a real-time interactive interface that shows which areas of the city have the highest number of calls for service, and historical trends.
“Each of the charts, graphs, and dropdowns were tailored so that we can check when and where we have the highest number of CFS; it’s all accessible and right at your fingertips,” Carranco said.
And it’s making the City of Oak Creek Police Department more effective and efficient by putting officers in the right place at the right time. “If anyone in the department wants to learn more about what’s going on during their shift, or even in a specific area, they can go to this and find out for themselves. It’s a huge time-saver,” said Carranco.
Carranco developed this dashboard while pursuing his master’s degree in Criminal Justice Data Analytics at Marquette University. “We’ve made many updates to it, and have added, removed, and enhanced the charts and graphs to get it to where it’s at right now. And because it’s all built in-house, it can easily be adjusted for the department’s needs,” Carranco shared.
The dashboard also tracks trends, giving the Oak Creek Police Department a real-time snapshot of what’s happening in the City. “Right now, we can see that in the past 28 days there’s been a 7.5% increase in calls for service," Carranco said. “We collect data on a daily basis, and it’s rewarding to apply it in a data-drive way for the department.”
Carranco is ecstatic that he won and said waiting for the winners to be announced in this international competition was excruciating. “It was the longest five hours of my life!”
Now that he’s won, Carranco hopes to share the dashboard with other police departments in the Milwaukee metro area. “If they use the RMS as we do, it’s essentially plug and play, and they too can start harnessing the power of their data,” Carranco said.
