City of Oak Creek Earns National Recognition for Snow and Ice Control Excellence

Post Date:05/20/2026 1:33 PM

Oak Creek, Wis–May, 20, 2026– The American Public Works Association recognized the City of Oak Creek as a 2026 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award winner during its annual Snow Conference in Cleveland, Ohio.

APWA presents this award to municipalities that demonstrate outstanding management and operations while promoting best practices and minimizing environmental impacts.

This national recognition builds on Oak Creek’s continued success at the state level. In December, APWA’s Wisconsin Chapter awarded the City’s Department of Public Works the 2025 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award (cities over 25,000 population).

Department of Public Works with Common Council holding awards from National Recognition for Snow and Ice Control ExcellenceOak Creek has modernized its winter operations by combining proven techniques with advanced technology. Crews conduct pre-season spreader calibrations to ensure precise application rates, use segmented plow blades to remove snow more effectively, and apply salt brine as a cost-efficient and environmentally responsible deicing method. The City also installed pavement temperature sensors that deliver real-time and forecasted data, helping crews make faster, smarter decisions.

“Honestly, we keep things simple and stick to the basics that have been taught for over a decade,” said Tyler Buerger, Assistant Director of Public Works. “What makes the biggest difference for us is our use of pavement sensors; they’ve been a game-changer."  Having accurate, real-time data on pavement temperatures, forecasts, and road conditions allows us to follow Wisconsin Department of Transportation guidelines with confidence and consistency.”

Buerger emphasized that while tools like segmented blades and pre-wet systems improve efficiency, and said, “it’s really the combination of reliable data and proven practices that drives our success.”

Crews used advanced storm data this past winter to plan their response days ahead of each event, building on systems and strategies refined over the past four years.

“To me, this award is a clear indication that we’re doing things the right way,” Buerger said. “We’ve come a long way from simply jumping in the truck and plowing. Ongoing training, adopting the latest standards, and putting in the extra work have elevated a program that was already strong.”

Oak Creek has also developed a structured training program that ensures operators understand not just what to do, but why each method matters. That understanding has helped build consistency and performance across the team.

“What makes this even more impressive is that our team is very young,” Buerger added. “For such a young group to perform with the discipline, confidence, and consistency of seasoned veterans speaks volumes about their work ethic and commitment.”

This recognition highlights Oak Creek’s commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and public safety, ensuring safer roads for everyone who lives, works, and travels in the community.
